Now, a case from her past shows her how differently things might have turned out. Thirteen years ago, Bennie Rosato took on Jason Leftavick, a twelve-year-old boy who was sent to a juvenile detention center after fighting a class bully. Bennie couldn't free Jason, and to this day it's the case that haunts her. Jason has grown up in and out of juvenile prison, and his adulthood hasn't been any easier. Bennie no longer represents those accused of murder, but when Jason is indicted for killing the same bully he fought with as a kid, she sees no choice but to represent him. She doesn't know whether or not to believe his claims of innocence, but she knows she owes him for past failures-of the law, of the juvenile justice system, and of herself.

Most of all I love trying to figure out how Bennie Rosato is ever going to win a case when all the damaging evidence seems to point to her client. A past case she worked on that has implications that landed in her lap again. Unknown Unknown. But it seems more fair to rate the book based on how fast it had me flipping pages than based on coerupted intellectual analysis of its flaws.
Great story!!. Do you agree or disagree with this practice. Declan doesn't want Bennie to use her formidable skills to get Jason off. Now a case from her past shows her how differently things might have turned out.
I love Lisa Scottoline's books and especially the ones that star Bennie Rosato. She is a ball butsing lawyer who does not give up. She has a reputation of winning cases, but does not resort to playing dirty.

Lisa Scottoline begins this winning novel with a short but addictive opening sentence, one that sinks the hook and draws the reader into deep and dark waters. But two other surprises await. The first is that the new client is a former one, a young man who Bennie represented over a decade before. The second is that he is accused of murder, and as Bennie herself notes, it has been quite some time since she has defended a murder suspect. She is driven, though, to defend this particular individual.
I think that one of the reasons that I hesitated for so long is because it vinunzio the third book in the series and I wasn't sure that it would work out of order but it works perfectly as a stand-alone novel. Remember the bully he had a fight with at school all those years ago. So he believed. A good read - solid 3.
