Back in my early Microsoft days, I routinely pulled all-nighters when we had to deliver a piece of software. Once or twice, I stayed up two nights in a row. The book was recommended to me by my daughter Jenn and John Doerr. In an effort to wake us all up to the harm of sleeping too little, he sometimes reports as fact what science has not yet clearly demonstrated. But even if you apply a mild discount factor, Why We Sleep is an important and fascinating book. Does everyone really need seven or eight hours of sleep a night?

I have to admit, I skipped a few chapters due to my incompetence in sleep science. But the overall picture is stark enough that I'm now very worried about the ongoing sleep loss epidemic. Our minds aren't working well enough to even realize there's a problem. I had never had trouble sleeping before, but a perfect storm of deadlines and responsibilities had made for several miserable nights in the past week. I admit that I was primarily hoping for a quick fix for improving the quality of my sleep during stressful times. While I did learn a number of useful tips, I also received a host of terrifying statistics, anecdotes, and well-researched studies on the effects of sleep deprivation. Walker sets out to convince the reader that a lack of sleep in this country causes, correlates with, or exacerbates nearly every disease and leads to enormous social and economic costs. By the end of the book, I found myself convinced by his argument.


We fail to recognize how our habitual state of sleep deficiency has come to compromise our mental aptitude and physical vitality, resulting in the slow accumulation of ill health. Getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night is not some luxury to aim for but an absolute essential for the brain to process new information and prepare for receiving more the next day! I bought an Oura ring after reading this book, it's unclear whether this is the scientific consensus, which gives great data and graphs about my sleep. It wf a lot about human nature that we think we can overcome or simply ignore our hardwired biological need to meet our minimum requirement of sleep. The book makes a strong case that we are vastly under educating people about the benefits of sleep. More concerningly, the same study found that participants who slept six hours per night for ten days also experienced a revifw increase in microsleeps. If so read this excerpt from the beginning of this book pand you will understand why this book caught my attention. Some readers will not appreciate the negative things that the author has to say about caffeine and alcohol.

  2. Don't eat within 4 hours of bedtime. This is one of those books you just want to buy 20 of to gift to your family and friends. Apparently your core temperature will also fall after a hot bath. The less you sleep the shorter your life span will be.
