Philadelphia, Here I Come! -

E xile and emigration are constant themes of Irish drama. But Brian Friel's play , beautifully directed by Lyndsey Turner, lends fresh life to a stock situation in two ways: by giving voice to the hero's alter ego, and by focusing on the power of unarticulated feeling. This, as Friel himself once said, is as much a play about love as emigration. Friel's big trick is to show the two sides of year-old Gar O'Donnell as he prepares to leave stagnant Ballybeg and his father's dry-goods store for the joys of the US. The public Gar initially seems brooding and cautious, while the private Gar is wild and fantastical. But Friel's artistry turns what might be a mechanical device into something more complex by constantly shuffling the two roles. When the public Gar recklessly tells the girl he dreamed of marrying that Ballybeg is a backwater that turns everyone crazy, the private Gar urges him to shut up.

Philadelphia, Here I Come! Set in the fictional town of Ballybeg , County Donegal , the play launched Friel onto the international stage. The play takes place on the night before and morning of Gar's departure to America. Gar is portrayed by two characters, Gar Public "the Gar that people see, talk to, talk about" and Gar Private "the unseen man, the man within, the conscience". Gareth lives with his father, S. O'Donnell "a responsible, respectable citizen" with whom he has never connected. Gar works for his father in his shop and their relationship is no different from that of Boss and Employee.

Despite coming from completely different backgrounds and family situations I could relate to the confusion young adulthood brought on Gar. In Madge, Friel presents philadeplhia portrait of a typical good-natured housekeeper. Although she is a servant by definition, Madge is connected to the family on a deep level. He may not remember the same things; he may not have the same memories; but that does not mean that he does not remember.
