ACMI's Del Kathryn Barton: The Nightingale and the Rose | knife.suDel Kathryn Barton is an incredibly talented and well-renowned Australian artist — the winner of two Archibald Prizes — known for her expressive and heavily stylised artworks. Her style very intricately embraces delicate linework, as well as the power of textural surfaces. In this short film accompanied by a supportive exhibition currently on show at the ACMI in Melbourne, Barton delves into the art of the moving image, her artworks and designs brought to life — in collaboration with filmmaker Brendan Fletcher — to tell the story of The Nightingale and the Rose , first written by Oscar Wilde for his collection The Happy Prince and Other Tales way back in I was blown away by the sheer amount of work on display. This process involved the creation of numerous two-dimensional artworks as well as physical props that were then all photographed and digitized for use as models for animating, through a combination of methods including stop motion and texture mapping onto 3D surfaces. The bringing-together of various materials both hand-crafted and digital reflected the highly collaborative approach to this work. The Nightingale and the Rose has a run-time of only 14 minutes, but in this small amount of time we are given a glimpse into a beautifully surreal world brimming with emotion.
